Shared Frames
An Open Air Memory Lab
Participatory Public Art Installation
An Open Air Memory Lab is a participatory public art project by MulticArts that explores collective memory through community participation and site-specific artistic practice.
Developed by Pola Rader and Eugenia Bakurin, the project transformed the public square at Vinetaplatz in the Gaarden district of Kiel into an open archive of shared memories. Historical photographs from local archives were brought into dialogue with personal stories and recollections contributed by residents, creating a continuously evolving public photo album.
Rather than presenting history as a fixed narrative, the installation invited participants to actively contribute their own experiences and perspectives. Through this process, public space became a place for dialogue, remembrance and collective authorship, where individual memories formed part of a shared cultural landscape.
By combining archival material, spatial installation and community engagement, An Open Air Memory Lab investigated how participatory artistic practice can strengthen local identity and generate new forms of social interaction through storytelling.
